Codeskop

Telegram alerts

Codeskop sends alerts through your own Telegram bot, to a private chat or a group. Creating the bot takes about two minutes.

Requirements

  • A Telegram account (the app on your phone or Telegram Desktop).
  • For group alerts: permission to add members to the group.
  • Owner or admin role in Codeskop, on the Growth plan or above.

Why your own bot?

The bot belongs to your team: you control its name, picture and who can talk to it, and you can revoke its token at any time. Codeskop only uses it to send your alerts.
  1. Create a bot with BotFather

BotFather is Telegram's official tool for creating bots.

    1. In Telegram, open @BotFather and press Start.
    2. Send /newbot.
    3. Give it a display name, for example Acme Alerts.
    4. Give it a username that ends in bot, for example acme_alerts_bot.
    5. BotFather replies with the bot's token. Copy it; it looks like this:
    Bot token
    7234519012:AAHk3fZ9bW4mQ0v1eXample-TokenForYourBot

    Keep the token private

Anyone with the token can control the bot. Paste it only into Codeskop. If it leaks, send /revoke to BotFather and connect the new token.
  2. Connect the bot in Codeskop

Open Settings → Notifications, choose Telegram, name the channel (for example Mobile on-call) and paste the bot token. Codeskop checks the token with Telegram and stores it encrypted.

  3. Say hello to the bot, or add it to a group

    • Private chat: press Open @your_bot in Codeskop (or search for the bot in Telegram) and press Start.
    • Group: add the bot to the group as a member, then send /start in the group.
  4. Find the chat

Back in Codeskop, press Find my chat.

Codeskop looks for the chat that just messaged your bot and links it. If more than one chat has messaged the bot, pick the right one from the list. The bot replies Connected to Codeskop, and the channel shows as active. Press Send test any time to check it.

  5. Use it in alert rules

In Alert rules, choose this Telegram channel under Send to. Alerts arrive as a formatted message with an Open in Codeskop button.

Troubleshooting

  • “No messages yet”: press Start in the private chat, or send /start in the group, then press Find my chat again. Messages older than 24 hours aren't visible to bots.
  • “This bot has a webhook set elsewhere”: the bot is already used by another service. Create a new bot just for Codeskop.
  • Alerts stopped: the bot was removed from the group, blocked, or its token was revoked. The channel shows Last delivery failed; remove it and connect again.
  • Several teams: connect one Telegram channel per chat or group. The same bot can be linked to several chats; connect it once per chat.
